MISSIONARY PROJECT

PANAMANIAN MISSIONARY CENTER (COMPA)

COMPA REGION NGÄBE GUBLÉ

RADICALS

What is?

It is the project that the IDEC of Panama has created in response to the pressing need of the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca. It seeks to train 25 young people in transformational leadership to impact their communities of origin and reduce the high level of poverty, illiteracy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Description of the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca

The region is inhabited by the indigenous ethnic groups of Ngäbe, Buglé, as well as peasants and 213,860 people live there and its area is 6,968 km2.

The region is characterized by its mountainous terrain, steep slopes, and nutrient-poor soils, generally with high rock content, a characteristic that makes agriculture difficult.

The Ngäbe Buglé generally live in stick houses with grass or zinc roofs and dirt floors.

Why the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca?

In the Ngöbe Buglé region, the average number of years of schooling for the population over 15 years of age is only 2.8 years and the illiteracy rate reaches 45% of the inhabitants. This leads the population to be misinformed and allow atrocities that are compromising the future of new generations. Statistics from the Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa), between 2013 and 2017, reflect that in the Ngäbe Buglé community it is 2.1 percent in rapid HIV tests, which are positive 82 percent in sex male and 18 percent in the female. Likewise, the data show that, of one hundred percent of the cases diagnosed by the Minsa, 16.7 percent are concentrated in people between 14 and 19 years old, which says a lot about how the population is affected by this disease.

Scope

The youth leaders manage to shepherd a minimum of 35 youth per community. With the RADICAL program we are going to impact 10% of the population per community, that is, 3.5 young people will be impacted by the intensive work that will be carried out on each young person. And in 25 young people trained and empowered for 15 days, we will have 88 people transformed in 1 year. All 88 people become trainers. In a decade we would have 61,600 people with a different worldview and prepared to change the negative reality that the region has had.
